Hiss, do not bite

Excerpts from speeches delivered by Siddha Yogi Shri Siva Shankar Baba

Quoting a parable of Sri Ramakrishna: One day some villagers complained to a saint passing by their village, about a harmful snake harassing them. The saint met the snake and advised it not to harm people and gave it a mantra to recite whenever it felt angry. It was not long before the villagers discovered that the snake would not harm them. They were grateful that the snake would no longer bite. However, some of the villagers in their anger and hurt at what the snake had done and some in their meanness, began to beat the snake with sticks and stones. The snake was so fearful of leaving its hiding place; it was soon dying from lack of food and beatings handed by the villagers.

One day, the weakened snake heard the footsteps of the holy man and with every bit of strength crawled out to meet him on the path. The saint, seeing how terribly ill the snake looked, asked for the reason. The snake, with great effort, told the story of the torment it received from the villagers and how for days it had hidden underneath a rock to protect itself. The holy man said, "Oh, foolish snake, I told you not to bite but I did not forbid hissing! Why did not you scare away your tormentors by hissing?"

So you must hiss at wicked people. You must frighten them lest they do you harm. But never injure others with your words.

It is okay to express your displeasure with someone as long as you do not use harsh words, for anger disturbs the person harboring it as well as the recipient. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. You can show your disapproval by professing an angry face or increasing the tone of your voice. But you must ensure you do not wound anyone. Also, an angry man will find it very difficult to make friends and retain them.

Adopt some technique to control the violence inherent in man -- through meditation or some physically taxing game like football, boxing etc.
