The state of a Mahaan

Excerpts from speeches delivered by Siddha Yogi Shri Siva Shankar Baba

Life is a composite whole of good and bad, praise and criticism. Why bother about anything that happens to you? Just cruise your way through life like a bubbling brook. That state of being unaffected is penance.

In my worldly life, I was a rich businessman, owning a sprawling bungalow in Anna Nagar (Chennai) and a fleet of buses. My house was used as a location for many movies. My quest for God led me to go on pilgrimages for four years; and at Tiruvannamalai, Lord Muruga advised me to complete my worldly duties towards my family members so that I could come into this spiritual service totally. I came back to find that my business had dwindled in my absence for want of proper management. So I sold all my assets to meet the losses, and settled my children, before I stepped totally into spiritual service.

Why did the Lord instruct me to go back to the world that I had left behind? If I did not fulfill my responsibilities totally, I would have to take another birth, which is unwarranted for a person in my state.

Like Siddhartha, who renounced the life of a prince for attaining enlightenment, I too was leading a life of luxury when this search for the Divine became the sole pursuit for me. That is why my search yielded results -- because it was true. If you seek God as an escape route for your problems, He will not reveal Himself to you. When you are prepared to give up what you have because all that you want is God, that is true fervor. I am this type of a person and that is why God adores me. The fact is God is within me. Paramahamsa used to often tell Vivekananda, 'Naren, do not assume I am loving towards you; my love flows to the Siva within you.' That's how a Mahaan is; his love is directed towards the soul contained within; what use is a physical form to him. That is why a Mahaan's very glance is enough to solve your worldly problems; he has performed such immense prayers that he has accumulated powers of penance. And his conviction that God takes care ensures that God does take care of everyone who comes to him.
